Keep Your Young Child's Teeth Healthy
It is important that you keep your young child's teeth, yes, even the baby teeth, healthy.
Why?
- First, you don't want your children to experience the pain that comes with tooth decay, tooth abcesses, etc.
- Nor do you want their health compromised as it can be by periodontal (gum) disease, infection, etc., that can come from lack of proper dental care and hygiene.
- Finally, in order for the adult teeth to assume the correct position in the child's mouth, you need the baby teeth to remain healthy until it is time for them to come out.
Here are several things you can do to prevent early tooth decay:
- Put only water in a bedtime or naptime bottle--never acidic or sweet liquids and that includes milk and fruit juices.
- Never use a nursing bottle filled with acidic or sweet liquids (including milk and fruit juices) as a pacifier.
- Do NOT dip the infant's pacifier in honey, syrup, or sugar.
- After each feeding, wipe your infant's gums and teeth with a clean, damp washcloth or gauze pad
- Once a few teeth have come in, begin to clean them daily with a child-size toothbrush followed by dental flossing.
- Be sure your child gets the flouride needed for decay-resistant teeth. Talk to Dr. Winchester about this.
- The first birthday should also be your child's first appointment with Dr. Winchester--don't put it off.
