After An Immediate Denture

After fitting of an immediate denture, follow these instructions.

  • Day of Treatment:

    • Slight bleeding is normal and can last up to 3 days. Biting pressure on the denture will promote clotting and decrease bleeding, at least initially.
    • Cold is the thing to have. Use an ice pack or a cold moist cloth and apply it to the cheek to minimize the swelling and bruising. During the first 6 hours, keep the cold-pack on the affected area for 15-20 minutes of every hour. After that, you may use it less frequently for the next few hours to help with any pain and continued swelling.
    • You should not use an aspririn-based pain medication right away because aspirin is a blood thinner and that works against wound healing. Instead, you may want to use an acetominiphin-based medication, such as Tylenol, to relieve the discomfort you may experience. If this proves to be insufficient, and if Dr. Winchester did not already give you a prescription for an analgesic, contact Dr. Winchester and request one. As with all medicines, be sure to use these as directed by the doctor and, please, keep them from the reach of toddlers and small children.
    • Don't remove the denture today, but rinse your mouth with warm salty water before going to bed. Mix about 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse with it.

  • Second day:

    • Carefully take the denture out twice a day and clean it with a toothbrush and a low-abrasive toothpaste or a denture cleaner (available at your local drug store.)
    • Rinse your mouth with a warm salt-water mixture each time you have the denture out. Mix about 1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse with it.

  • First Week:

    • Restrict yourself to soft foods. Avoid crunchy, spicy, and hot foods. Things like carrots, potato chips, fried chicken, tacos, hot sauce, etc. are not on your diet during the first week.
    • Sleep with the denture in your mouth unless Dr. Winchester has given you other instructions.

  • After the first week:

    • Remove the denture when you sleeping so as to relax gum tissues.
    • If you experience sore spots on the healing gum tissue, contact the office and come in for an adjustment of the fit of the denture.

  • First Six Months:

During the first six months, rapid gum shrinkage occurs and you may have times when the denture becomes too loose. Contact our office and come in to let us insert a temporary liner as needed to stop this. Denture adhesives may also be used, but let Dr. Winchester direct you on this.

  • After the first six months:

After the first six months, gum shrinkage will more or less stablize and we will be able to make a more permanent reline. Be sure to come in to our office and let Dr. Winchester refit your denture so that it fits properly and does not give you any problems such as sore spots that may be caused by improper fit.
