Enamel Shaping

Dr. Winchester, dentist, Birmingham, Alabama, smiling_man_med.gif Sometimes the overall appearance of your teeth can be improved through a process known as enamel shaping. Candidates for this procedure include people whose teeth that are:

  • slightly crowded
  • uneven
  • too long in appearnace (e.g., eye teeth)

Enamel shaping modifies teeth by removing or contouring the tooth enamel to create a more appealing, or more balanced, natural look. The process, often combined with bonding, is usually quick and comfortable. No anesthesia is necessary while shaping is done and results are immediate.

You must note that because shaping involves the removal of tooth enamel, it is irreversible. Once removed, the tooth enamel cannot be replaced.

You must also realize that enamel shaping is a limited process--it can "fix" only minor problems. For example, crowded teeth may require braces. Of course, that is not as bad as it once was--check out the new Invisalign® system that is more comfortable and cannot be seen like the old metal braces. Dr. Winchester will be happy to help you determine the best course of action to make your teeth look beautiful. Why not contact us for an appointment today? Consultations cost you nothing and you may just learn how to get the smile you've always wanted.
