After Periodontal Treatment

After a periodontal treatment, on the day of the treatment:

  • If you are having any discomfort, you may take over-the-counter pain medication.

  • To help remove bacteria that is present in your mouth, drink at least 8 glasses of water.

  • Restrict yourself to soft foods until discomfort and soreness is gone--avoid crunchy, spicy, and hot foods. Things like carrots, potato chips, fried chicken, tacos, hot sauce, etc. are not on your diet today!

  • Rinse with warm salt water to help with tenderness and soreness--mix about 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and rinse several times during the day. Continue this for a day or two as you see fit to until the soreness is gone.

  • Brush gently today--plaque will start to form again immediately, so you need to do this, even if your gums are tender. Use a gentle, flouridated, tartar-control paste.

  • If you are in too much discomfort for it, you may skip flossing today only. After today, floss every day.

After the day of the treatment, follow all the normal home-care instructions Dr. Winchester has given you. Improvement in your periodontal disease is dependent upon improvement in your home-care, i.e., your oral hygiene.
