After A Filling
After a filling, whether silver (amalgam) or white (composite), the following instructions apply:
- Composite (white) fillings set up hard immediately so you can eat immediately. If you had a silver filling (amalgam) you should wait for at least 3 hours before eating or biting together hard.
- Children pose a special problem when they have been given an anesthetic. They should be carefully watched and supervised until the "feeling returns." Because of the strange feeling from the anesthetic, children may bite or chew their lips, cheeks, or tongue--possibly causing serious damage to themselves.
- During the first day or so, sensitivity is often noticeable. Cold sensitivity is quite common for a period of days after a filling. In general, the deeper the cavity that had to be filled, the worse the sensitivity problem.
- The anesthetic injection site and the gum around the filled tooth may be sore for a few days after the filling is done.
- Because your tongue has so many nerve endings and is so sensitive, the filling will often feel somewhat foreign to your tongue at first, but this will quickly fade away as you get used to the difference.
