Temporomandibular (TM) Disorders

The Temporomandibular (TM) joint is one of the most complex in the human body because it allows for movement in so many different directions and ways. Sometimes, this joint, for a number of reasons, can also be the source of problems. The most common symptoms of TM disorders include:

  • Pain in or around the ear

  • Pain spreading from the ear to the face

  • Tender jaw muscles

  • Clicking or "popping" when the mouth is opened

  • Difficulty opening the mouth

  • Jaws that "lock," "get stuck," or just don't work right

  • Yawning or chewing causes pain

  • Certain types of head and neck pain

If you have any of these problems, you may need attention and you should make an appointment for a free consultation visit with Dr. Winchester. Often minor TM problems can be helped by taking simple steps like:

  • Occlusal appliances such as a bite plate or occlusal splint

  • Physical therapy such as moist-heat application, facial muscle massage, etc.

  • Diet modification--eating soft, nonchewy foods can help in some cases

    • Biofeedback/relaxation training
In some cases, medicines such as muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs, and anti-axiety agents can help. In still other cases, selective tooth recontouring to adjust the patient's bite can solve or help the problem--or braces may be the answer. The only way to know what attention you need is to let a trained professional, such as Dr. Winchester, look at you.
